Copa America 2016
Anyone else watching?

I've watched a few games now, and here are my thoughts.

a) The refereeing is awful. A Jamaican bloke got a straight red for winning the ball first, then kicking the other player. A Panamanian player went straight over the ball and didn't even get spoken to.
b) About time a referee gave a penalty for handball. Funny that it was against the USA and they went on to lose 2-0.
c) Wes Morgan didn't start for Jamaica. When he did get on, he continually gave away fouls for manhandling players at set pieces.
d) The US commentators are crap.
e) Dr. Joe Machnak, the US rules official is a complete waste of space.
f) The Septics managed to play the Chilean national anthem for the Uruguayan team.

VH, doesn't sound like I've missed much, most of the decent games kick off too late here. I've backed Argentina to win it but the betting experts reckon it might be hard for them in the later rounds due to the travelling they'll have to do. their squad is by far the best so fingers crossed

You think THAT is bad, you should try watching the Oceania Nations Cup, this year being held in Papua New Guinea.

Shocking pitches, terrible officials and Pacific Island football players kicking the shit out of everyone for 90 minutes in 30 degree tropical heat.

Yep.

Vamos Venezuela!

I believe Morgan was dropped due to a fall out with the manager over "partying".

This Panamanian bloke Godoy fouled Arce twice in 3 minutes. One was a straight red, the second was a clear yellow. Persistent fouling too, no cards.

Tonight is the Argies v Chile, which I'll record and watch tomorrow. 10pm kick-off, have the lad to take care of in the morning.

All these teams seem to be flying thousands of miles between games.

I'll supporting Peru but I don't hold out much hope seeing as they just about scraped a win versus the mighty Haiti and they have Ecuador and Brazil coming up.

Re: Copa America 2016
Only watched two of the games and that's probably my lot, as they were shit and the standard seemed poor.

Not sure if it's just in my head or not, but club standards have risen obviously while no nations currently stand out as being that good.

Worst Brazil team I've ever seen and I reckon the Euro's might be similar, though hopefully not.

It appears to be on Premier Sports in the UK which is a subscription channel.
Euro 2016 will be enough football for me over the next few weeks.

Best game so far was Argentina vs Chile...Fast Furious...Technically proficient players...@-1 to Argentina...Messi rested...Aguero only subbed on late...Chile well beaten but scored in 3rd minute of OT...

Mexico Uruguay...next best...3-1 to Mexico vs 10 man Uruguay...no Suarez...

Argies my favourites.to win...

USA technically poor...Dempsey their only threat...and not up to this level...lost first game to Colombia

My rating so far...

Argentina
Mexico
Chile
Uruguay

Brazil squad well below par as best players not included it seems...and Dunga is a boring defensive coach....

Thoroughly enjoyed the Uruguayan captain still singing through the Chilean national anthem. Got to wonder what he was thinking.

Anyone know why tournament is happening again this year? Sure Chile won it only last year!

This is the Copa America Centenario. It's a "Special Edition" tournament celebrating 100 years since it started. In addition to the South American teams, they've invited North American teams.

Re: Copa America 2016
The commentary is frustrating. They don't offer opinions on anything, just tell you what you are watching. No views on the refereeing either.

I think the US commentators have been ordered to take a non-invasive a[[roach so they don't piss the organisers off.

No, for good or bad that is how you are taught to be a good commentator. You are a neutral voice.

They have invited 2 outside teams since 1993 I think.

it id wildly different to the stuff we get from the PL commentary teams. It's difficult to comprehend that an over the top tackle that should have been a straight red was not worthy of critical comment.

Panama scored immediately and Bolivia were disadvantaged, not just by the goal but by the fact they were still playing against 11.

Given that commentators are also journalists, shouldn't they be reporting the facts, even if critical or negative?

FYI, no attempt at snarkiness here, genuine comments.

"Given that commentators are also journalists, shouldn't they be reporting the facts, even if critical or negative?"

I guess that is the point, the fact is that nothing was given. Again for good or bad, anything beyond that is an opinion, even if it seems an obvious one.

I don't generally like American or Canada commentators because they are less experience and use terms that sound quite strange to me now. (Like British commentators doing the Winter Olympics) but I can see that style more so in them.

Does anybody know if they will be showing this on any channels in Fiji?

Maybe I'm too used to the PL commentary teams where Lee Dixon pulls apart every tackle and refereeing decision and decides what's legal, what isn't and what should have happened. It'll be interesting to see how the Euros commentaries differ, if at all, from the PL.

Either way, that game was Panama v Bolivia, so who gives a shit?
